Why are grapes bad for dogs?

Science hasn’t come up with the definitive answer, but there is a toxin in all grapes that can cause kidney failure or death in canines.  Whether green, purple, sweet, or sour… all grapes have a toxin that is poisonous to your dog. Dogs may not show any immediate signs after ingesting even a grape or two but within 24 hours they may begin to vomit and then die. Keep grapes in the refrigerator and out of reach for your dog. When you are having a snack of grapes do not tempt him. Should your pooch consume a grape or 2, please contact your veterinarian for their advice on how to work with this situation.

What do Vets and nutritionists have to say about dogs and grapes?

If your dog eats grapes, get her to a vet immediately. Veterinarians suggest that vomiting should be induced to remove the grapes from the stomach of your dog. However, Pekingese and Pugs are susceptible to aspiration pneumonia from this process. Activated charcoal may be administered to coat the stomach and decrease the absorption of toxins through the stomach. The charcoal can be purchased in a slurry form at the pet store or grocery. Your dog may also need to be placed on supportive care by your veterinarian. There are other symptoms that may present such as decreased appetite, sudden weakness or lethargy, abdominal pain, dehydration, excessive thirst and increased or decreased urine output. When you realize your dog has ingested grapes of any type take him to the vet as he may need to be given intravenous fluid treatment ASAP to reduce the toxicity and support the kidneys in case of renal failure.
